Trey Erwin Day!

In memory of Trey, I am beginning this blog site for our family on Trey’s birthday.  He would have been 16 today, July 31, 2012.  In memory of Trey, we had a little party with his close friends at the church, watched Lion King (his favorite movie), had pizza and cake, and releases balloons.  I joked when we were about to release the balloons that Trey would surely be laughing because he knew how much I hated balloons in the house.  They usually would just lay around the floor for me to walk over and I end up popping them!

I wondered if the news would say anything about Trey Erwin Day and I saw a small piece on channel 5 news.  This is one thing that I was never really able to express about Trey because he always read the Caring Bridge – he hated being the center of attention.  We had such a problem with that when he began to play football as a young child.  He didn’t have that mean streak down him.  Some call it aggressiveness.  He was just coming into that confidence.  Just ask Mike O’Neill!  When Peyton Manning called, he emotionally broke down that night and cried.  He just could not understand why Peyton would call him.  Trey wanted to give back.  We tried to work something out with St. Jude during that time that he could give back to other children when he received phone calls or some way that he could do things.  Because of HIPAA reasons, it just did not work out.  We just tried to remind him that he was being blessed for being so obedient as a son.  I guess now I can be thankful for not having an aggressive son.

Tomorrow I will have the opportunity to share with the youth of our church.  Because we have concentrated so much on the celebration of Trey’s life, so many, even our family, have not properly begun or even learned to grieve.  Some are feeling guilty and without direction.  That statement can be true about many things other than grief.  Jay and I have said over and over again, without the Lord, we could not walk this walk.  I know that others do it, but I am sure they do it much differently.  I am not saying we are not grieving, because we are.  But we know from where our ultimate strength comes.  Deuteronomy 31:6 says “Be strong and courageous.  Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.”  We hold to this promise! He will NEVER leave us or forsake us!

This promise goes for any believer.  God will never leave you or forsake you.  How comforting.  When we lay our heads on our pillows at night, we know our God will cover us with his Almighty mercy and grace to get us through the next day, however difficult that may be as we struggle to find our new normal.  That’s what I will address in my next post, how do we even begin a new normal.

I’m sure Jay has received just as many texts, emails, and calls as I have.  Your encouragement today has been overwhelming.  God touched so many lives through Trey’s testimony.  Make no mistake, there is so much spiritual warfare going on in this world and we need to keep sharing Trey’s testimony.  That will be another post on another day that I will challenge you.  What are you doing to do with what Trey and the Holy Spirit taught you?

I hope that if Trey touched you in some way, you were able to celebrate Trey today like we did.  We love our boy.  We miss our boy.  There are moments that we don’t know how to move and personally, I don’t want to move.  But like lyrics from this song, this is what keeps me going – His love never fails and He never gives up on me, never runs out on me!

One Thing Remains by Jesus Culture

Higher than the mountains that I face
Stronger than the power of the grave
Constant through the trial and the change
One thing remains
One thing remains

Your love never fails it never gives up it never runs out on me

On and one and on and on it goes
It overwhelms and satisfies my soul
And I never ever have to be afraid
One thing remains

In death and in life I’m confident and covered by the power of your great love
My debt is paid there’s nothing that can separate my heart from your great love
